Visa required by all except the following:

- citizens of countries under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP);

- citizens of Bermuda and Canada, provided holding valid passports;

- citizens of Mexico, provided holding a valid passport and a US Border Crossing Card.

Other foreign citizens will need a nonimmigrant visa.

Landed Immigrants of Canada and British residents of Bermuda who are citizens of, and have valid passports from, Commonwealth countries or Ireland are no longer eligible to enter the USA without a visa.

The Transit Without Visa (TWOV) and International-to-International (ITI) transit programs have been indefinitely suspended as of 2 August 2003. All passengers using US airports for transit purposes are now required to obtain a transit visa. This does not affect qualified travellers travelling visa-free under the Visa Waiver Program.

Nonimmigrant visas are for international travellers, (citizens of other countries), coming to the U.S. temporarily. This visa allows you to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (airport, for example) and request permission of the Department of Homeland Security immigration inspector to enter the U.S. A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States.

The type of visa needed is defined by immigration law, and relates to the purpose of your travel.

Currently, 27 countries participate in the Visa Waiver Program, as shown below:

Andorra, Iceland, Norway, Australia, Ireland, Portugal, Austria, Italy, San Marino, Belgium, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, Liechtenstein, Slovenia, Denmark, Luxembourg, Spain, Finland, Monaco, Sweden, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, New Zealand, United Kingdom.

All VWP travellers, regardless of age or type of passport used, must present machine-readable passports; previous one-time exemptions for first-time VWP travellers without MRPs ended June 26, 2005. In addition, depending on when VWP travellers’ passports were issued, other passport requirements will apply:

1. Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended before 10/26/05 – no further requirements.

2. Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended between 10/26/05 and 10/25/06 – requires digital photograph printed on the data page or integrated chip with information from the data page.

3. Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended on or after 10/26/06 – requires integrated chip with information from the data page (e-passport).

4. Temporary, emergency, official and diplomatic passports are exempted from biometric digital photo and chip requirements, but must be machine-readable.

5. Austrian, Italian, French and Temporary German Passports .

If a traveller cannot meet the requirements explained above, he/she cannot travel without a visa on VWP and must obtain a visa for entry into the United States.
